Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel, the quirky actress that is one half of She & Him, is in talks to star in a new comedy on Fox, home to popular shows such as Glee and Bones

The show, which was originally titled Chicks and D*cks, is said to be “an ensemble series about the sexual politics of young men and women”.

Liz Meriwether, who wrote No Strings Attached (2011), will be behind this new production. While it is exciting to hear that Zooey will be on the radar for more positive, rather than controversial, news, it is questionable whether this new show will impress viewers. Not to curse the deal before it has even been made, but can Zooey really offer us something new?

500 days of Summer (2009), her most recent movie was amazing, but, in all honesty, it wasn’t because Zooey was necessarily spectacular. She played a cute, unattainable girl who happened to have good taste in music. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played Tom Hansen, was the one who truly shined in the film.

It seems as though the roles Zooey picks always seem to represent the same kind of person: the adorable girl who everyone loves, for no particular reason, but no one can truly catch. We saw this in Trillian, in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but maybe this will be her chance to bring us something unexpected. There is no word yet on when the pilot will be shot or when it will premiere.

Despite her somewhat homogenous roles, hopefully Zooey will be able to snag the deal with Fox. She is talented, no doubt, but she just needs to show range, and this show could do that for her.  Her big sis, Emily, is already a star on the network, and maybe she can follow her to find the same success on television.
