Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes is known for being hilarious at all times even in the matter of personal issues, but there was a slight change in her rambunctious personality when she revealed that she had the Big C.

During an interview to air Monday, with Ellen DeGeneres, Sykes disclosed that she had cancer.

“I had breast cancer,” says Sykes. “Yeah I know, it’s scary.”

The cancer was discovered after she went in to undergo cosmetic surgery, more specifically, a breast reduction.

“This was in February. I went for the reduction.  I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff.  Every time I eat …Oh Lord.  I’d carry a Tide stick everywhere I go,” she quips.  “My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction.”

She continued to say, “It wasn’t until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they had found that I had DCIS (Dual Carcinomain in Situ) in my left breast.  I was lucky, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer.  I was so very lucky.”

Although Sykes pointed out that she was  extremely lucky she was still aware of the dangers of cancer no matter the stage or kind.  “Cancer is cancer,” says Sykes. “I had the choice of, you can go back every three months and get it checked. Have a mammogram, MRI every three months just to see what it’s doing. But, I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already.”

In the end Sykes opts for what some would say might have been a drastic and dramatic solution considering the stage and kind of cancer Sykes claims to have had.  Sykes had a bilateral mastectomy.

“I had both breasts removed… because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer.”

Standing by her decision she explains, “It sounds scary up front, but what do you want? Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it’s too late?”

Ok so maybe her reasoning is a bit more rational than we thought, although it’s still a bit drastic for my taste.  Announcing that she had cancer during this time makes her a perfect forth front for Breast Cancer Awareness month coming this October.

Sykes was not sure if she was going to tell the public due to her public appearance, “How many things could I have? I’m Black, then Lesbian.  I can’t be a poster child for everything,” said Sykes.  She then went on to jokingly say, “I was real hesitant about doing this, because I hate walking.  I got a lot of cancer walks coming up.”
