Top three hotties of old Hollywood: Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and, of course, Mr. Marlon Brando. Oh Marlon…if you yelled “STELLAAAA” outside my window I’d surely answer your call…though you should know the name’s Leigh. Even with oranges stuffed in his cheeks circa The Godfather, I still found Marlon totally handsome. (Is that weird?)
To this day Marlon’s still considered one of the greatest Hollywood hunks of all time. No wonder producers of the 1955 movie, Guys and Dolls, chose him as one of the leads alongside the great Frank Sinatra. The movie itself remains an old Hollywood classic…and it’s about to be re-made!
Lucky for us, rumor has it that two of our favorite modern day Hollywood hotties are wanted for the starring roles of Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit. In the classic, Brando scored the goal of Masterson and Sinatra the role of Detroit. Any guesses who’ll play the new leads? Here are some clues: One of the guys has famously appeared nearly nude in a film (while doing lots of hip thrusting…to the delight of women everywhere), and the other first stole our hearts playing the sensitive guy in a movie that had us hating Zooey Deschanel (and it takes a lot to hate that gal!)
It’s Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt! How perfect is that?! Guys and Dolls has always been a musical and we already know that Joseph is the most adorable singer and Channing sure knows how to dance. They’re a winning duo! And though there’s no word yet on who will play who, Channing strikes me as much more Brando than Joseph, who could totally be a Sinatra!
Fox has secured the rights to do the remake, but there’s still no director or writer attached. Sounds like Fox wants to snag the leads before any other decisions are made, and apparently both Tatum and Gordon-Levitt are interested!
Guys and Dolls is based on the short stories by Damon Runyon, which were adapted into a musical by Jo Swerling and Abe Barrows. The play premiered on Broadway in 1950 and five years later was turned into the movie starring Sinatra and Brando. It’s set in the 1920s and tells the story of a man (Sinatra) who wants to set up a “permanent floating craps game” for New York gamblers. Without any money to do so, he bets a gambler (Brando) that he won’t be able to seduce the prim and proper Sarah Brown, a woman who runs the local missionary, to go away with him to Havana. Of course the gambler and Brown end up falling for each other, with the girl having no idea that it was all a bet!
With no director or writer on board yet, I wonder whether they’ll keep the idea of a musical or totally turn the remake into a modern day dramedy (drama and comedy) sans music! However, the fact that musically gifted Gordon-Levitt and Tatum are on board for the film shows that the remake will probably stay a musical, and there’s nothing wrong with that!
With the highly anticipated film, The Great Gatsby, set to be released next month, I’m pumped there’ll be another 1920s-set flick in the making! My biggest wish is for Gatsby director, Baz Luhrmann, to sign on to Guys and Dolls, too! When it comes to gorgeous-looking musicals, Luhrmann’s the best! Remember Moulin Rouge?! Aaah! So good!
No matter how this remake turns out, with Channing and Joseph as the stars, you know this new Guys and Dolls will be a hit! I’m dying to know who’ll be playing Sarah Brown – the role originally played by the beautiful Jean Simmons! Young, pretty, and a bit uptight, who knows which hot Hollywood actress will snag the coveted role! I could totally see a gal like Evan Rachel Wood nailing it!
What do you guys think? Who would you choose to play Sarah Brown? And what do you think of Channing and Joseph as the leads?Tags: 1920s, Channing Tatum, Fox, Frank Sinatra, Guys and Dolls, Joseph Gordon Levitt, marlon brando
