Slash Photo by Kevin Nixon/Guitarist Magazine

Slash, of Guns n Roses fame, was recently performing down under. He stopped in at Triple M Radio, one of Australia’s most famous radio stations, and told stories of his childhood. His mother was a costume designer to the stars when he was a child. She had done costume work for celebrities like Diana Ross, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. When Slash was being interviewed, he dropped a bombshell. He walked in on his mother and David Bowie in a seemingly postcoital position. And yes, THAT David Bowie.

“My mom started working professionally with David Bowie at first. I’m pretty sure that’s how it started and then it turned into some sort of mysterious romance that went on for a while after that…I was seven or eight years old. [Bowie] was always over and they were always together.”

He continued, “I caught them naked once. They had a lot of stuff going on, but my perspective at eight was limited. Looking back on it, I knew exactly what was going on.”

Slash’s parents had split up before his mother began dating Bowie in the mid-70′s. This, however, doesn’t make up for the fact that she didn’t lock her door! How traumatic! In fact, even if it were just his parents’ naked butts he saw, he probably would have been equally traumatized. I shutter to think and thank heaven that my parents insisted on having a quality lock on their door.

Ola Hudson/Slash’s mother

Please don’t think I’m trying to insult Slash’s mom or her memory. Ola Hudson was successful and famous and just as important of a part of the music industry as Slash became years later. Upon her passing in 2009, Slash said of his mother:

“She was also the coolest Rock and Roll mom a Rock junkie like myself could ever possibly want to have. She was responsible for exposing me to a lot of the music that would influence me as a musician growing up. As well as introducing me to ‘the life’ and priming me to survive this crazy business that I’m now in.”

We are all human. We all make mistakes. Sometimes, it’s a big mistake, like a relationship where you were so blinded by love, you didn’t see that it was unhealthy. Sometimes, it’s that first sip or puff or snort that leads to addiction. Sometimes, however, the mistake is as small as forgetting to lock the door when your boyfriend comes over. So we learn from our mistakes, and some of them, we can retrospectively laugh at. Like David Bowie’s butt.
