What we thought was the end of a legend is turning out to be a second beginning. John Galliano legendary fashion designer is becoming a design teacher at Parsons the New School for Design.
Galliano known for dramatics and flair in his designs had an abrupt end to his career after being caught saying hateful remarks. On the road to recovery, in February he collaborated with designer Oscar De la Renta and will now head a class titled “Show me Emotion.”
A long fan of Galliano’s work I am happy to see him getting back on his feet. A teaching gig might be the path needed for him to reflect on who the future John Galliano is and what his brand will become.
Not long ago Galliano reviewed the work of second year students at his alma matter Central Saint Martins for a critique. Maybe the Tim Gun route will be the way to go for his future endeavors.
Meanwhile I think it is important for future designers to learn from a legend or else we will be subject to fast fashion forever with no details or quality valued.
Show Me Emotion will be a three day workshop where master class students will train in the context of fashion practice and understand what it is like running a design house in the 21st century. Although this sounds wonderfully delicious the process to get in is as rigorous as a collection to be scheduled at fashion week.
Students will be chosen based off of pre submitted work along with faculty recommendations. a short essay or video component, a visual aspect tied with the entry and a required 3.0 average.
It may seem like a lot for only a three day workshop but who can put a price tag on mentoring with a design legend ?
Would you want to take John Galliano’s class?
