Shorts have always been part of the summer wardrobe. As we get older, one understands their fashionable purpose. We see them on the runway of every spring collection, but shorts have become more than just a summer article of clothing. Now a days, they come in an assortment of colors and cuts, but, of course, the daisy dukes will always be in fashion — thanks to Jessica Simpson.

Shorts were first brought in style in the 1960′s when fashion starting to become major. Models such as Twiggy and actresses such as Ava Gardner and Marilyn Monroe would wear them. As fashion emerged, the short style became popular. It became a staple in the women’s wardrobe rather than just the mens. Shorts became known as sex-appeal because they showed skin and elongated the legs. In the 1970’s Southwest Airlines used to tell their flight attendants to suit up in short-shorts and go-go boots.

Over the years, the hemline varied in lengths. Besides wearing shorts for the obvious reason — warm weather — the trend has become a must have in a woman’s closet. In the winter, shorts and tights are common with boots. As for summer and spring, the possibilities are endless. Besides the denim shorts, chic and stylish is in style and baggy shorts’ cuffs can be turned-up. Shorts also look chic with slouchy tops or a blazer. Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Prada all had the hottest shorts of the season on their runways. Shorts have also become more work appropriate. Now, shorts above the knees are accepted in some office settings.

Silk shorts have also become a popular hit. They are light and ideal for summer due to their texture. Some styles are made to look like a skirt. The trend works for windy summer days, when a skirt will blow away. When buying shorts for the upcoming season the task isn’t so easy. There are many new cuts to choose from such as boyfriend, the slouchy chic silhouette, and skirt shorts. All of them are fashionable and can be dressed up or down. The shorts have a history in the fashion world, and will always remain as a must-have.
