Blake Lively in a Sheer Chanel Gown

This summer’s delicate offerings in the world of fashion are light, pretty and feminine sheers. Sheer fabric is beautiful, romantic and chic and offers a breezy, flirty appeal that is perfect for wearing during the summertime. See-through clothing—once considered taboo in fashion— expertly creates the illusion of bared skin, and the provocative combination of transparency and flesh is alluring and eye-catching. This trend is all about revealing the assets you most like to flaunt, but in a classy and sophisticated manner.

Filmy sheer layers floated across the spring runways, creating an ethereal, feminine presence. Designers left little to the imagination for their collections, choosing light, sheer chiffon and silk dresses, maxi skirts and blouses to showcase on the catwalk. Alberta Ferretti, Anna Sui, Jason Wu and BCBG MaxAzria all demonstrated their sheer genius with breathtaking designs that effectively established sheer clothing as a fashion trend for the upcoming season. Other collections by designers like Chloe featured long, stunning evening dresses that were the epitome of classy chic, and one of the most popular looks overall was long sheer skirts or pants layered over short opaque bottoms.

The sheer look can be either classy or provocatively edgy, but you must be careful to stay inside the limits of good taste to prevent a fashion faux pas. A big misconception about this trend is that flashing more skin will cross the limits of good taste in public and turn your outfit into a style disaster.  It is possible to show some skin and flash subtle sheerness while keeping your appearance neat and classy. It’s what you wear beneath that matters the mos.

To ensure your look remains elegant and appropriate, wear only one sheer item at a time and pair your sheers with conservative pieces. The secret is wearing camisoles, tank tops, bandeaus, etc. underneath loose, flowing sheer dresses and blouses. A pair of opaque bloomers, mini shorts or briefs is suggested for sheer skirts.  Also, you can wear clothing with sheer insets that show some flesh but not too much. Just make sure that the peek-a-boo sections are placed to reveal the best spots of your figure. It’s your decision what to wear with your summer sheers, but the best route may be demure, modest pieces instead of bold, sexy lingerie.

Sheer equals femininity and sex-appeal this summer. Well- balanced transparency can make a look airy and elegant and allow one to sport stylish and classy clothing that will enhance your silhouette with a refined sexiness. Whether you’re shooting for a simple, romantic outfit for a special date or a casual ensemble for a relaxed outing in the summer breeze, the sheer look can be transitioned from haute couture fashion to street or formal chic.  Adopting a more open-minded and modern attitude towards sheer fashion can certainly pay off this season!
