The Lam Show & Trump Copy

Derek Lam is taking legal action against Ivanka Trump because of a copycat shoe. His legal team just sent a cease-and-desist letter to the businesswoman because of her Cadie wedge sandals (priced at $150) which look extremely similar to his Ayami wedge sandals (priced at $780).According to WWD, one of Lam’s shoe designers was shopping online on Bloomingdales when he noticed Trump’s shoe. The designer quickly contacted Jan-Hendrik Schlottman, Derek Lam CEO, who then sent the cease-and-desist letter to Trump’s company and the licensee, Marc Fisher Footwear. Trump has seven days to pull the shoes from any retailer that carries them and send information regarding the sales of the shoe to Lam.

When asked why they decided to go after Trump, Jan-Hendrik Schlottman said:

“We have seen very similar copies before but we have never seen a shoe that perfectly copied.  It’s such an investment to make a shoe … we had to protest this.”

Also, because the shoes are so similar but so differently priced, Lam’s legal team believes that this could convince consumers to purchase the Trump shoe.

Lam might decide to sue for damages, and Trump is expected to take quick action regarding this issue to save her reputation.
