Nicki Minaj was ordered to vocal rest after finishing up her Pink Friday North American tour. Minaj revealed via Twitter that she had a bruised vocal cord when she spoke of commiserating with Jordin Sparks, who also had a bruised vocal cord. Despite the orders of her doctor, Minaj still performed live on the Today Show, seemingly ignoring the recommended 14-day rest.
Minaj performed well, but some commentators feel that they could tell she struggled in the beginning. I couldn’t tell if it was a struggle or if it was simply the difference between a studio recording and a live performance. When she performed her mega-hit Starships, I did notice that she had the audience take over a few times. Though it may have seemed like a nice gesture of embracing her fans, it also could have been perceived as though she was using her fans like a crutch. Feel free to judge for yourself by clicking here. As much as I believe that she was meant to fly, the question is, how long can she fly with a broken propeller?
Minaj may have defied her M.D.’s orders because it wasn’t a full concert and, as she emphatically proclaimed during her song, this is her hometown. I’m one for hometown pride, especially when it’s New York. But if your town cares about you as much as you do about it and its people, then they will understand if you reschedule your concerts for the betterment of your future. As I’m writing this, Nicki Minaj is set to perform a free concert tonight at the Roseland Ballroom and has yet to cancel. She is also scheduled to perform at Britain’s V festival this weekend and in Dublin on the 21st. Hopefully she tries to rest her instrument throughout the day and during the week. Three days may not be close to the 14 that were recommended, but it’s better than nothing.
