So if you have spent your childhood listening to “Like a Virgin” or imitating the Gaulteir conical bustier, you would surely love this exhibit. A pop up exhibition has been dedicated to Madonna’s fashion in the past at the Macy’s store in Century City, California. It will be a day only exhibit on the 25th April which will feature some of the singer’s most famous costumes that she has worn in the past.
Set alongside her latest collection from the Material girl line that she created with daughter Lourdes, Madonna has herself hand-picked eight pieces, which are her favorite from her extensive archive, to be featured in the mini retrospective. This installation will showcase some famous and well known pieces such as the Jean Paul Gaultier conical corset from the Blonde Ambition tour, the Like a Virgin wedding dress, the purple Christian Lacroix bustier from 2004 and many more outfits that will show the singers style evolution over the years. Also it is a great way to promote the junior fashion line-Material Girl to its customers (us!) who probably weren’t born when these videos were popular.
By showcasing her evolution of style over the years, we will also be able to see how bold and shocking her fashion was. Madonna has always, in the past and present, has taken sacred garments like wedding dresses, religious embellishments etc. and re-contextualised them. She has influenced many individuals in the past, and is responsible for many liberating moments in the fashion industry, her ‘Like a Virgin’ wedding dress being the best example.
Although I feel a day is a rather short period of time to showcase such a big fashion icon, as a result of such an exhibit, fans and followers of will be able to taste a bit of her personal quirky and shocking style as well as some of the iconic pieces of the past. So, if you are soaking in the sun in California then it is definitely worth paying a visit to this exclusive retrospective. And for the others who can’t see it live, we can just look back at the fashion icon’s rebellious style and get inspired.
