Since the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, I’ve been itching for a Spice Girls reunion or the glorious return of the “girl group” in the mainstream pop music circuit. For the people reminiscing the glory days when *NYSNC and the Backstreet Boys reigned the airwaves and our obsessive fangirl hearts, English boy band One Direction currently delivers incredibly well in that market (from pretty faces to scream about and catchy tunes to belt in the car, the five get the job done.) But the question still remains: when will the next big girl group capture our undying attention?

Thankfully, England has got us covered (yet again!) with a four-piece girl group by the name of Little Mix. The group (which consists of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirwall) is basically the closest thing I’ll ever get to fulfilling those pangs of nostalgia I feel for the fierceness and unbreakable sisterhood embodied by the Spice Girls. If you can’t believe me, just listen to their new tune, “How Ya Doin’,” featuring the queen of in-your-face spunk, Missy Elliott.

“How Ya Doin?” is basically the personal anthem for people like me who just can’t get to the phone on time, especially when the person on the other end happens to be some scrub. And to repeat the wise words of another iconic girl ensemble, TLC: “I don’t want your number (no) / I don’t want to give you mine and (no) /I don’t want to meet you nowhere (no) / I don’t want none of your time (no).” Little Mix wants you to leave your number, but don’t bother with getting a call back.

Little Mix’s single perfectly captures the attitude embodied by the likes of past greats like TLC and the Spice Girls, and doesn’t stop short when it comes to production either. The song is a delightfully sassy throwback hit, with its sampling of an answering machine (which gleefully reminds me of “Digital Get Down,” a classic *NSYNC jam), an incredibly funky backing beat and a slew of impressive harmonies. The epic return of Missy Elliott also gives “How Ya Doin’?” an extra boost of legitimacy with her rap skills (she helped revamp the song by remixing it).

What do you think of “How Ya Doin’?” Are you a fan of Little Mix? Tell us below!
