It’s tough in the dog-eat-dog world of teenybopper stardom, but today the rivalries and feuds are not equally matched. While One Direction is currently enjoying the success of a worldwide tour and other benefits from their overwhelming success (Harry Styles was recently spotted on a date with Rod Stewart’s 25 year old model daughter, Ruby), The Wanted previewed their upcoming new single. And it seems like a lofty joke, especially with a title like “Walks Like Rihanna.”
In a preview released on Friday, a snippet of the song predominantly featured mockable (and soon to be notorious, I bet) lyrics: ”She can’t sing/ She can’t dance/ But who cares/ She walks like Rihanna.” Even though One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” is a song that judges a woman’s own self-worth – how the hell do a group of teenagers know how a girl feels? – at least the song is catchy in its own right. In comparison, it’s literally impossible to belt the awkward hook of The Wanted’s track without feeling a giant wave of embarrassment wash over you.
But let’s get down to a more serious discussion: what does it mean to “walk like Rihanna,” anyways!? In Maroon 5′s song “Moves Like Jagger,” the title provided some ounce of credibility, considering Mick Jagger was (and still is!) quite skilled when it came to swaying his hips and giving a good show. But when it comes to “Walks Like Rihanna,” I don’t even think about Rihanna’s walk. And I bet a lot of other people don’t either (have you seen Rihanna’s everything, not just her walk)?! The Wanted, like always, are missing the bigger picture.
