The runway can clue us in on ways to layer pieces from our everyday wardrobes. Credit:

With cooler weather just around the corner for many fashionistas, layering is a fun and easy way to put together a polished daytime look.  However, learning to layer pieces correctly is essential to perfecting the perfect autumn ensemble.

Key pieces to consider when layering include, but are not limited to, slim-fitting jackets, cardigans, slouchy scarves, and chunky sweaters.  Not to mention fun accessories to layer over outfits, like feminine belts, long necklaces, and bags.

The secret to layering is keeping the bulk to a minimum by incorporating streamlined pieces (hello, sleek blazer!) with statement-making items like a wildly knitted infinity scarf.  When layering, keep the focus on the top half of the ensemble, rather than the bottom.  Do this by pairing any layered look with a pair of flattering dark wash skinny jeans or fitted black leggings.

Although layering is not exclusively limited to the Fall season, it is always fun to experiment with new clothing combinations in celebration of cooler weather.  Designers like Diane von Furstenberg,  Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors have incorporated elements of layering into their Fall 2011 runway looks.

Lauren Conrad effortlessly perfects layering with her put-together outfit.

Self-proclaimed fashion maven Lauren Conrad pulls off the autumn layering look effortlessly by pairing a streamlined blouse and fitted jeans with an eye-catching ivory scarf slung casually around her neck.  This ensemble is perfect for an afternoon shopping excursion or the classroom.

Layering is a fun, easy, and economical way to spice up your daily wear for the change of seasons.  By pairing new and unexpected combinations in outfits, you may find yourself looking at clothes you have owned for years in a completely new light!
