Lady Gaga at CFDA 2011

Some called Lady Gaga’s award “controversial,” while others actually doubted whether she deserved it.  There was a lot of uncertainty about Gaga receiving the The Fashion Icon award at CFDA.  Check out the nay-saying from Forbes.com:

“Does Lady Gaga merit the honor of being in the company of C.Z. Guest? Does she create trends and inspire women to dress like her in the same way that they copy every one of Sarah Jessica Parker’s outfits? Does she have the power to move and sell fashion merchandise as Kate Moss?”

But she shocked all the viewers by wearing the most astonishing dress (though I’m sure Gaga wouldn’t consider it astonishing) at the event.  Lady Gaga wore a sheer black dress with an outrageous green wig and sky-high platform heels.

Perhaps this is why she was given the award. She will wear something that nobody can imagine. The previous winners were Sarah Jessica Parker, Chanel Iman and Kate Moss, people who would never dream about wearing what Lady Gaga wears, let alone be able to handle it.

The other winners were:

Womenswear Designer of the Year

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler

Menswear Designer of the Year
Michael Bastian

Accessory Designer of the Year
Alexander Wang

Swarovski Award for Womenswear
Prabal Gurung

Swarovski Award for Accessory Design
Eddie Borgo

Swarovski Award for Menswear
Robert Geller

Eleanor Lambert Founders Award
Hal Rubenstein of InStyle

International Award
Phoebe Philo for Céline
