Kid Cudi's New Project

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, Kid Cudi’s alt-rock project WZRD debuted its first single, entitled “Brake,” from their upcoming album. Cudi tweeted before the debut, “Tonight, you will all witness the new chapter, the new journey. Music will never be the same…” What humility.

Fans of Kid Cudi, be forewarned: The ambitious young rapper and fellow bandmate Dot da Genius have constructed a droning, lo-fi track that bears almost no resemblance to Cudi’s previous work. There are no big hooks – nothing to keep your attention locked during the 5-minute-long gloom epic.

I’ll be completely honest when I say that I don’t like this song. Recently, the rapper tweeted, “WZRD is bringin Punk Rock back with a whole new energy and sound,” but there is nothing punk about this. It’s long-winded. It’s dull. But as much as I dislike this, there’s something irresistible about Cudi’s voice that draws me right back in. Let’s just hope this isn’t representative of all of WZRD’s work.

The untitled album is set to be released on Jan. 30.
