A scene from Runaway featuring Selita Ebanks

Kanye West premiered his short film, entitled “Runaway,” this passed weekend on MTV and BET.  Before its television premier however, Kanye premiered his short film before a star-studded audience at Sunshine Theater in NYC which included Swizz Beatz, John Legend, Chrisette Michele and supermodel Selita Ebanks. The short flick has evoked references to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Under the Cherry Moon” by Prince.

“[It's] the new ‘Thriller’ in my opinion,” said Rahim Wright after seeing the film at its NYC premiere. “And people are going to have to battle with that, but you’re going to have to figure Kanye out. You can’t just take it at face value and think that you know what he’s talking about.”

The film, which stars ‘Ye and Ebanks, was premiered in big cities all over the world before touching down in New York. Kanye took the time to explain his journey over the last several years, including, of course, the Taylor Swift incident from last year’s VMAs.

“It represents everything I ever wanted to do since I was five,” West said. “…the colors, the wings, the gold, the sky…”

“Runaway” was filmed in Prague, and premiered in Sydney, London and Los Angeles, as well as several other cities, but Ye comments that he was most excited about New York, his second home.

“This is the biggest premiere so far,” he said in an interview with Billboard. “It’s the last one and the one closest to when it premieres on TV, so I’m really excited.”

Kanye added that his favorite scene is near the end of the film, when Ebanks (who plays a phoenix shunned by society when Kanye takes her as his girlfriend) takes to the sky.

Kanye closed with a few words on his new creative freedom, found in the realization that he is, essentially, hated by everyone: ”If everyone hates you you don’t have to do anything to make people happy anymore.”

“Runaway” made its televised debut at 8 PM, EST on Saturday, October 23rd on: MTV, MTV2 and BET. It was also featured via live streaming on MTV.com, BET.com and VH1.com, with a Q&A session which followed on MTV and MTV.com. Kanye’s short film can be view on his blog, at KanyeWest.com.
