The Kanye West Foundation, founded to reduce the high school dropout rate, has recently closed for unknown reasons. The foundation was inspired by Kanye’s mother, who passed away from plastic surgery complications in 2007. Kanye’s mother was an English teacher and extremely passionate about education.
Joseph Collins, former executive director of the foundation, sent an email to associates last month saying, “I am reaching out to let you know that the Kanye West Foundation has officially closed it doors after a successful 4+ years of programming and events. It has been an incredible experience working with Kanye and the board to realize his mother’s vision, and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to lead the Foundation.”
The charity raised an average of $492,000 and made total grants averaging $18,080 in each of 2007, 2008 and 2009. The foundation was not directly financed by Kanye, and raised the majority of its funds by working with outside companies and individuals with personal connections to Kanye. Kanye has yet to comment on the issue, and no further statements have been released by Collins about why the foundation decided to close.Tags: education, Kanye West, the kanye west foundation
