Kanye West’s short film “Runaway” simultaneously premiered on BET and MTV on Saturday night.  The film was co-directed by Hype Williams and starred model Selita Ebanks who played his love interest. The film centered around his attempts at a relationship with a phoenix and creatively contains multiple forms of symbolism leaving the message of the film up to the viewers’ interpretations. The film also features many of the singles from his weekly Good Friday releases.

He explained some of the meaning behind the film in a Q&A with Sway of MTV.  “Even before the parallel of the crash in my career and the rise from the ashes, even before that parallel I was feeling this idea of this Phoenix,” said West.

“Thinking about it, I wanted every girl I have ever been in a relationship with to feel like a piece of her was being represented and even for my mother to feel like she was being represented when she sees this and just for females to connect with the different emotions. And also a representation of creativity and being different.”
