Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson

“American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez is no Simon Cowell – he would never break down and cry over a contestant on national television.

On Wednesday night, the show started handing out its top 24 spots, but 27-year-old Chris Medina from Milwaukee didn’t secure one of them.

Medina touched a soft spot in America’s hearts, and Lopez’s of course, when he brought his brain-injured fiancée to meet all three “Idol” judges – Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Lopez.

That was the biggest factor in what made it so hard for Lopez to break the news to Medina.

Just like her predecessor female judge Paula Abdul would do, Lopez praised Medina before saying anything else. Then she went on to tell him that what it comes down to is that it’s a singing competition and he just wasn’t strong enough. When he left the room, Lopez lost it. She broke down in the comfort of the two men on either side of her, worried that she had broken his heart, even though all three judges agreed that Medina shouldn’t give up.

“I just couldn’t believe I had to deliver this news to this person who had been through a lot–and is going through a lot…I felt like I didn’t it do it well enough to send him into where he needed to go in his life and be OK,” Lopez told eonline.com.

Medina remained calm, cool and collected – at least on camera.

We can join Jenny from the Block and wish Medina and his fiancée the best of luck with their future. And hey, Medina still gets to perform on “The Tonight Show” tonight, so things are starting to look up for him already.
