Happy July 9th, also known as National No Bra Day! Bras, despite their ubiquity and seemingly harmless undergarment status, are a complicated topic for womankind. While some see them as a tool of repression, others love and collect them as a style statement. For some women they are a necessary evil, and for others their daily uniform. Some women couldn’t care either way. Bras man, what are you going to do with them? Well today, that answer is quite simple – take them off.

Far from a pointless liberation from “boob jail,” National No Bra Day is actually in honor of breast cancer awareness, according to its website (yes, the holiday actually has a website… no, it’s not as pornographic as the title might lead your dirty mind to think.) Today will be the third annual celebration of this so-called national holiday, which has over 250,000 people participating according to its Facebook page. That’s a lot of unworn bras… but what’s the appeal?

Besides the show of support towards breast cancer awareness and research, it’s a day to have fun, let loose in both the literal and figurative ways, and to just enjoy being a woman. And while I wouldn’t suggest you go traipsing into that meeting with your boss, or a dinner with your boyfriend’s parents sans support, within reason No Bra Day is a prime opportunity to give those over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders a break and test out that backless dress or finnicky halter that never quite worked before.

Our apologies Victoria’s Secret, but today is a day for the ladies… and their “ladies.” Will you be joining in on the braless festivities?
