Last week, Victoria’s Secret model, Candice Swanepoel, attended an event in West Hollywood to promote the latest Victoria’s Secret line of swimwear. She appeared to have dropped some weight since her last public appearance and this has caused her critics to say that she is “too thin” to be a swimsuit model.
An article in the New York Daily News states:
“There’s sexy skinny and then there’s scary skinny. Model Candice Swanepoel looked more like the latter Wednesday when she made an appearance to promote the new Victoria’s Secret line of swimwear at the collection’s launch event in West Hollywood. Swanepoel’s itty-bitty bikini only highlighted her stick-figure legs and bony arms. The 22-year-old South African’s waist was also shockingly thin.”
Normally, a model being thin is not headline news. However, Victoria’s Secret models are known for being curvier, sexier, and above all else, healthy.
MSNBC reported that a fashion insider close to the Victoria’s Secret models speculated that Swanepoel’s future with the company might even be in jeopardy. The source said,
“Like all Angels, Swanepoel, is expected to be ‘healthy and muscular’ according to her Victoria’s Secret contract. There is a really clear criteria for both Angels and the catalogue. Their career path is Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue then to Angel, it’s the highest paying contract there is, period. The image is about being voluptuous, it’s not fat, but it’s curvy.”
Although, her rapid weight loss might not come as a surprise. In the past, during New York Fashion Week, Swanepoel told ABCNews.com that she has trouble keeping weight on. She stated that she eats heavy food, such as steak, but has a hard time keeping on weight due to her busy work schedule and constant traveling.
The model fired back at critics by telling People magazine, “I am healthy and happy. I’m heartened to know how much everyone cares about me, but in this case, everything is normal and good.”
