We have seen influences from the roaring twenties for some time now (with Downton Abbey and the most recent spring runways) and now the much awaited film The Great Gatsby is finally out. No matter what you have to say about the film overall, no one can argue that it wasn’t visually stunning and beautiful. And the fashion was taken to another level altogether. Apart from the costumes, one of the standout influences we saw Great Gatsby have on fashion is the hairstyles and the influx of headpieces.

The 1920s had a powerful influence on fashion: The World War, the rise of flappers and the changing status of women in society stimulated a powerful change in fashion. Everything started becoming extremely modern. This powerful image of women was interpreted in the movie with direct descriptions from the novel added with many modern elements.

The most interesting hairstyle was Daisy Buchanan’s 1920’s bob. The Bob was the most prominent hairstyle of the twenties as it screamed ‘change’. The movie showed Daisy Buchanan with a modern take on the bob by creating softer bangs rather than the sharp fringe that Louise Brooks had popularized then. For a 20s look, I think the best look is to go for a sleek, sophisticated and sassy bob. Not only will it be a drastic change (that is if you have long hair) but it will create an illusion of volume and a fuller shape. Whether it’s a sleek Daisy Buchanan style or a Louise brooks look, a bob is definitely the go to style for this summer.

If you are not ready for such an extreme impact, then The Great Gatsby has influenced the influx of headpieces as well. We saw some extremely jewelled headpieces in the movie. The hair has just gotten a whole lot more decorative and ornate this season.  The perfect way to don this trend is to add everything from chains, headbands, feathers, scarves, slides or any hair jewellery.

Use stunning jeweled hair bands with open hair or for an elaborate evening, adorn yourself with movie star curls, an updo or even a regular simple bun.  If hair jewellery seems a little too much, you could wear this trend with little jeweled hair clips and wear them with your regular side puff.

This season, hair might be ornate and bejeweled, but it is extremely easy to wear. I am definitely going to be hunting for some vintage hair jewellery, are you going to rock this ‘roaring twenties’ hairstyle today?
