Track pant styles on spring 2012 runways

Are you ready to get sporty this summer? Designers have found a way to turn athletic wear into chic and sophisticated styles this season with track pants. Straying away from the standard tear-away track pants athletes wear, the track pant gets an instant style boost with sleek lines, varying silhouettes and bright colors.

Of course, there are the signature stripes down the leg as well as drawstrings, but the trend is easy to dress up a professional look or to dress down for a casual night out with friends. Here’s a quick style guide on the best way to infuse the sporty pants into your wardrobe while avoiding looking like you just came back from the gym.

(l-r: Karolina Kurkova, Liya Kebede and Ahn)

1. Keep it Basic

If the trend seems too daring, a great way to mix things up is keeping the color palette simple and wearing monochromatic tones. Model Karolina Kurkova was sporty-luxe in a slouchy shirt paired with a black men’s fedora, Salvatore Ferragamo bag and some amazing Isabel Marant colorblock pumps. Model Liya Kebede looked long and lean in Lanvin with loose track pants. Fashion blogger Ahn of 9 to 5 Chic was a personal favorite by showing how to pull off the trend for a more work appropriate style. She wore drawstring Zara track pants, Collective Habit sandals, an Alexander Wang blazer, a Theory button-up blouse and a Chanel purse. For a splash of color, opt for bold nail polish, accessories or pumps.

2. Tailor Master

As with any pants or trousers, tailoring to fit ups the style ante. Track pants are no different. A more tailored and structured silhouette  allows for more risk-taking as shown above on style bloggers Elin Kling of Style by Kling and Hedvig of Northern Light. Elin, in Tome cropped track pants, went for a more edgy style with a leather bomber jacket and black sandals. Hedvig embodied the sporty side of the trend, wearing a baseball cap and black bomber with her cropped track pants. And for less fitted track pants, you can easily pair them with a tailored blazer or waist coat for a seamless transition from day to evening.

3. Sweet and Sporty

Injecting soft colors and flirty crop tops or blouses is the best way to balance the sporty trend. Since pastel hues and feminine styles were all the rage during spring 2012 Fashion Week, finding a sweet shade should be a piece of cake. You can go for a more sorbet style like Evangelie of Style Heroine, pictured in the center. The fashion blogger was photographed on her blog in lavender 3.1 Phillip Lim track pants in a basic tank and sandals. At Isabel Marant’s fashion show, track pants were paired with lace, crochet and frilly blouses for the perfect juxtaposition of casual and glamorous.

What do you think of athletic wear mixed with heels and more sophisticated pieces? Which look above is your favorite and which misses the mark?
