Former supermodel Gemma Ward will be playing Catherine Wilson in the upcoming film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Ward, who has recently acted alongside big-name actor Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is building quite the resume, having acted alongside two Oscar-award-nominated actors, first Depp and now Leonardo DiCaprio. Ward’s character, Catherine, is the younger sister of Myrtle Wilson (played by Isla Fisher), Tom Buchanan’s mistress.
The Great Gatsby, directed by Australian film director Baz Luhrmann, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. It is set to be released on December 25, 2012 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The former top model, whose look was deemed the “it” look in the fashion industry from 2004-2007, had recently dropped the runway for the big screen, particularly after attacks on her weight following the death of actor and former boyfriend Heath Ledger. Ward, however, had always dreamed of becoming an actress.
Besides Pirates and the Great Gatsby, Ward starred alongside Toni Collette and Rhys Wakefield in The Black Balloon as the girlfriend of a boy whose brother has autism. In The Strangers, Ward was cast alongside Liv Taylor as one of the three masked intruders, “Dollface.” Ward was also cast in the stage production of The Ugly One, a performance that earned her many positive reviews. MTV Networks’ NextMovie.com named Ward one of the breakout stars to watch for in 2011.Tags: Carrie Mulligan, gemma ward, great gatsby, Isla Fisher, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Pirates of the Caribbean, tobey maguire
