Hip-Hop is filled with artists only in it to win it. Fighting their way to breakthrough, as are not looking around to see the type of impression they are leaving behind. Some leave the impression that they are only in it for the money or for the fame. But for Chicago Indie rapper, eGo (Expect Greatness Often), it is about bringing the “real” to hip-hop.
Hailing from the same city as Kanye West & Lupe Fiasco, eGo was inspired by their music and has been rapping since 13. Singing in the church he attended, people started noticing that eGo had a great voice and it pushed him to pursue music. Now, years into developing his music, eGo is working on bringing a new sound to hip-hop for the world to hear. I caught up with the rapper and got a chance to ask him a few questions on his music career.
-What inspired you to get into music?
eGo: I actually can’t think that far back. I’ve been into music since I sung at my Preschool graduation.
-In the state that Hip-Hop is in right now, what do you anticipate bringing to the table?
eGo: Real. I’ll bring real to the game. I love music, I’m not just in it for a pay check. I feel like the pad is my canvas and the pen is my paint brush. I am going to add color to the game and make art with my words.
-What are you currently working on?
eGo: Right now I’m working on my catalog. Songs for now, songs for later. I’ll be dropping a mix-tape in due time called All Work No Play simply because I’m always working and ain’t got time for games right now. I would name good songs that’s coming up but all of them are good and I have a lot coming.
-Which artists would you like to work with?
eGo: In the future I would love to work with Kanye West simply cause he does what I’m trying to do. Make art. He’s like my idol. Also, people like Eminem, Usher, Drake and Lil Wayne. They’re all amazing musicians.
-What do you want your listeners to get from your music?
eGo: From my music I want the listeners to get a piece of me. I don’t lie in my music. I might fabricate a few things but its all mostly true. I tell stories, but not just mine. I want listeners to understand I’m not just another kid that’s good with words looking for a big payday.
From the sound of his new song, “Hard Freestyle” eGo is working non-stop to make his music known. And by the looks of it, he is doing a good job. We might just see eGo on stage with his fellow Chicago rappers in a few months!
