Drake at the 2011 BMI Awards

The 11th Annual BMI Urban Awards was held Friday night at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. It was here where Drake took home the award for Songwriter of the Year.  With lyrics such as “My reality is brighter than your dreams are” and “I can’t even find the perfect brush, so I can paint what’s going through my mind.  Racing against myself, but I’m a couple steps behind”, I can’t say I’m surprised. In fact, I’m delighted.  Delighted to see that Hip Hop has come as far as it has and that Hip Hop artists can be commended for their artistic abilities.

Every once in a while you have that one particular artist that comes along and shakes things up.  Drake is undoubtedly that artist.  He has put soul back into the art form of rap, essentially bringing it back to its roots.  Drake has mesmerized us with his lyrics throughout his albums as well as through other artist such as Alicia Keys with “Unthinkable” and Dirty Money’s “Yesterday” featuring Chris Brown.

While accepting the award he thanked God, his mother and Sylvia Rhone for saying he didn’t have what it took to make it in the music industry.  It’s always the ones that didn’t believe in you, that push you to work even harder just to prove them wrong.

Many have their opinions about Drake about whether or not he’s overrated. Some may still have the image of him from Degrassi: The Next Generation, but Drake has left the role of Jimmy behind completely. Ok, even I will admit I wasn’t too sure about him in the beginning but he swept me off my feet with, “And she’s someone I would work with, that what I can tell from what she’s showing on the surface, I ain’t requesting anyone that’s perfect, but I just need a woman that will make it all worth it”, leaving me floating engulfed in his words.  I am more than confident to say that Drake will all have us still floating for many years to come.

Below is Drake’s acceptance speech
