Demi Lovato’s taken the R&B route, Selena Gomez is testing an Indian-reggae sound, and Miley Cyrus, the latest Disney starlet to switch lanes, is going hip-hop. Marina & The Diamonds’s heartbreaker aesthetic is built upon a closet of pink crop tops and drawn-on hearts. Her music embodies the same sweetly toxic taste: her 2012 album, Electra Heart, is basically the auditory equivalent of packaged candy (with a fatal kick for good measure.) She is the self-dubbed “Bubblegum Bitch” for a reason, and lives up to her name.
That’s why it comes as no surprise that Marina has paired up with a worthy contemporary for a full-fledged tour around the United States: English chanteuse, Charli XCX. The pair released “Just Desserts” on Wednesday as a free download, and the track fittingly represents the unstoppable power contained within their pop union.
