Reggae singer, Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie is facing life in prison due to heavy drug charges. In 2009, Banton was arrested in his Miami home after he was recorded on tape setting up a deal with an undercover informant for five kilos of cocaine. Banton was also videotaped showing up at an undercover police warehouse to complete the deal and was shown tasting the cocaine.Banton was arrested in his Miami home but declined ever wanting to buy or sell any drugs. He claimed that he was framed and that the only reason he spoke about drugs was to impress the man he was meeting with. Banton states that the undercover informant told him that he had connections in the music industry and he would help Banton out.
Banton was tried on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking offence. He spent 11 months in jail until the trial resulted in a hung jury last September. The prosecution has reopened the case and now is trying Banton with charges of conspiracy to possess wiht intent to distribute cocaine; attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offence; and using the wires to facilitate a drug trafficking offence.
The second trial began the day after Banton won a Grammy for his album, “Before The Dawn.” If charged, Banton faces life in a US prison. Banton has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer is convinced that Banton will not face life in prison. Lets hope that Grammy brings him some luck!Tags: Arrests, Before The Dawn, Buju Banton, Cocaine, Grammy, Grammys, Mark Myrie
