The story of Jeff Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the greatest Rock and Roll tales of all time. His seminal indie album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, is considered by many critics to be among the greatest albums to come out of the 1990s. It was even sampled by mash-up artist GirlTalk. Despite his underground fame and influential work, Mangum is a great enigma, disappearing for years at a time to explore esoteric folk genres and even openly crying on stage. more…

Sir Michael Rocks and Chuck Inglish aren’t exactly normal pseudonyms and their paths to alternative hip hop stardom weren’t exactly normal either. Riding the resurging waves of both Chicago Hip Hop (see Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco), and Midwestern Alternative Hip Hop (See Rhymesayers) The Cool Kids have become one of the wittiest, “just off the radar” independent groups of the decade. more…
The OverUnder has essentially become a one-man band fronted by Jimmy Connors. The band started back in 2007 as a quintet but has evolved into J’s solo project. People don’t seem to be complaining if the Facebook page and Youtube channel are any indication. General consensus is that the music is still awesome, and I have to say I agree. Below is my complete interview with Jimmy: more…
He has his own blog, he interviews reality stars, and it all started with his own passion for reality TV– specifically, Survivor. Rob Cesternino starred on Survivor: Amazon and later Survivor: All Stars. more…
Merrill Garbus, the voice behind the electro-pop group Tune-Yards, is far from the ordinary songwriter. Her songs utilize drum loops, electronic voice filtering, and countless audio effects on the groups only instruments: ukulele and electronic bass. With such minimalism, the singer creates a musical project that brings a relaxed, soulful vibe that electronic music has been missing for the past few years. more…

With the ever changing music scene, artists come in and out with tons of different styles, but we’ve found one that’s here to stay. Dion Roy started playing independently after being a bassist since he was in the 8th grade. He released his first album, Gallery, in 2009. Now, he’s on tour with Tyler Hilton, and is growing into a huge star overnight. more…
When it comes to empowering women, Central New York knows a great way to do it. Assault City Roller Derby is Syracuse’s first and only all-women non-profit roller derby league. ACRD was established in 2007 and is run completely by the team of 21 to 45-year-old women. more…
It was apparent that the crowd was taken aback by the band’s brazen attitude of leaving the limelight on the nerdy instrument made popular by Weird Al Yankovich. The surly man took to his accordion with a vigor matched only by his cohort’s love affair with the violin. Both men’s motions were executed with a beautiful imperfection that can only be attributed to years spent honing their crafts in the Bluegrass circles of the Catskill mountains. The accordionist’s brother grumbled lyrics into the microphone with a Dylan-like fervor, but the men with the old folk instruments stole the spotlight from right under his nose. more…
It’s rare that we see such raw talent in today’s music. Esperanza Spalding, a jazz bassist and singer, has been recognized for her ability and has been given the honor of playing at many prestigious venues including the White House. She won the Grammy award for best new artist in 2011, which makes her the first jazz musician to receive this award. more…
