The (kind of) popular grindhouse series Machete, from director Robert Rodriguez, will be back in theaters soon. The first film in the series, released in Summer 2010, made a lofty promise that it would be followed by two equally gruesome follow ups, Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again, and the director plans on following through on these promises.
Though the first film net only about $16 Million at the box office, it has developed a near fanatical cult following its release. It would have been easy for the director to forget the sequels he promised during a film which under performed at the box office, but the fan response led him to pursue his promised sequels:
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance. Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time”
The main character will hopefully be returning to the series, as Danny Trejo is entering into talks regarding the issue. Without Danny involved it would be difficult to promote the film, even to the most serious loyal supporters.
In typical grindhouse fashion, the story line will revolve around two main plot points. The first of which is Machete being hired by the U.S. Government to take down a super-dangerous drug cartel, and its head boss. Secondly, the script writers plan to feature a “Weapon of Mass Destruction” not only in the hands of the bad guys, but one rotating in space!
If the return of Danny Trejo and the promise of an awesome grindhouse script doesn’t get you too excited about the idea of another Robert Rodriguez blood soaked hit, maybe the secondary characters will. Those characters whom were not killed in the first movie (and there weren’t many who survived) will likely be back for the sequel. These include the likes of Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Lindsay Lohan.
Filming is expected to begin in early April, and the movie will be produced by Alexander Rodnyansky.
