At tonight’s 2012 Golden Globes Awards there was a common thread among all attendees, a minimal amount of jewelry. The dresses were gorgeous all on their own, so over accessorizing them would have been an instant fashion faux pas. Intricate bracelets, bright rings, and large earrings were the accessories of choice at the Globes. Top standouts for their perfect pieces were:
Heidi Klum
Tilda Swinton
Debra Messing
Jessica Alba
These ladies had some of the most fashionable jewelry looks, and some can be recreated with little cost or effort. For bracelets, and some earrings, you may have to just search out a lookalike piece for a more affordable price, but rings can often be recreated.
To make yourself a statement ring all you need are ring blanks, superglue, a button/broach/jewel, and scissors. To start, buy a set of ring blanks from an arts & crafts store. They are also available on sites like www.ebay.com and www.etsy.com . The next part is the hardest. Finding your statement piece can be tough, but any craft store/site should have plenty of options. You can also you a charm from a necklace or article of clothing to be your ring top.
Once you select that, glue it onto the flat spot on the ring. If it is a button, or some other jewelry with a back/clip on it, snip it off with the scissors so it’ll adhere smoothly to the ring. Let it dry for a few hours, and voila your statement ring. Below is an example of a possible recreation of Debra Messings’s emerald ring and Heidi Klum’s turquoise ring. Snip off the clip of the jewel below, or sand if it’s really tough, and glue to a ring blank.
For the earrings, glue the jewel of your choice onto a blank/spare earring back and let dry.
There are several videos on the web that demonstrate this technique if written instructions aren’t your thing, and one of my favorites is this one:
