Ke$ha

Bob Dylan’s usual raspy, almost moaning voice is beyond unique.  Some hate it.  Some love it.  When artists try to cover his songs, the key is making them their own because there is no copying the brilliant Bob Dylan.  He’s a creative monster ball compared to super pop artists such as Ke$ha.  She’s always drowned out by auto-tune, sounding like a music industry-made fake.

But Ke$ha has finally shown another side to herself.  Covering Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”, her voice is raw and a little raspy, capturing a little of Dylan himself.   All of the emotion she doesn’t use for her own music has been pulled out for this cover.  The bare background also helps her out.  It’s not droned out by synth and overproduced, overdistorted instruments.

You can actually hear the sniffling, giving a different image to the party girl.  It’s nice to hear some sort of passion and love for music within her voice instead of the usual, “Hey, look at me I’m such a bad girl because I can party harder than you can.”

So maybe there’s actually some authenticity behind the glitter and glasses?

Until she starts writing lyrics such as Dylan’s, I wouldn’t hold her to any standard just yet.
