When you go to a diverse university, you see a variety of different faces and different styles. Some students come to school dressed down, while others come dressed to impress. Melissa, a 19-year-old Journalism major at Rutgers University loves Forever 21 and is a religious shopper there.
Between balancing classes and a job at Hollister, she loves doing what almost every young woman loves to do: shop! She told me that most of her clothes are from Forever 21 and added that the brand is unique and she can kind of create her own look. Working at Hollister limits her freedom of fashion, which she finds hard, but after hours, she loves being able to wear what she wants.
Melissa has always been into fashion since she was a little girl, and always looked at her mom’s magazines. As far as magazine preference, it’s a tie between Allure and Lucky. To her, they have a lot of ads, but that doesn’t take away from either magazine. She still gets inspiration and ideas from the people in the magazines.
Usually she wears bright colors, but on that particular day she was wearing all black, because she had to do a group presentation for a class. Even though her outfit was simple, it’s still chic and it works. She added color with her red and black plaid peacoat. All of the clothing that she is wearing is from Forever 21.
Melissa thinks that fashion is a part of everyday life.
“It depends on the weather, you have to coordinate what you’re going to wear that day,” she said.
She added that it usually takes her an hour to get ready in the morning, because she is constantly putting things on and taking them off. Sounds like every girl’s daily morning routine. She plans on incorporating her style into whatever career she goes into.
When I asked her who her fashion icon is, she laughed and said Taylor Swift. She said that Taylor wears dresses and she loves to wear a lot of dresses, “which is fun and bubbly.” I’m sure Ms. Swift would be happy to know.
It doesn’t matter if you look simple one day, and vibrant and colorful the next. Sometimes your accessories are the ones that will stand out in your ensemble and you may have to tone down your outfit at times. Fashion is a part of culture and always will be. It’s the person that makes the outfit. You don’t have to be over the top. Sometimes the most simple outfits look better. Have fun and be confident!
