It’s no secret Lady Gaga’s music videos are shocking, to say the least. But Katy Perry seems to have taken particular offense to Gaga’s latest music video “Alejandro.”

On Tuesday, the same day “Alejandro” premiered, Perry posted on her Twitter page, “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.” Perry’s tweet didn’t specify what she was referring to, but it’s safe to say she is probably talking about the Gaga video, which features the singer in a rubber nun outfit eating rosary beads, upside-down crosses and other controversial religious imagery.

You may think it’s odd that someone who sang about bi-curiosity would be so offended by a fellow pop diva’s provocative video. Before Perry became famous for songs like “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot N Cold,” she was a pastor’s daughter singing Christian music, so it’s understandable why the video could have offended her on such a personal level.

This comment doesn’t mean Perry is changing her image as a colorful, outlandish singer. The teaser for her new video “California Gurls” ― her latest single in which she sings “Sun-kissed skin so hot we’ll melt your Popsicle” ― was also released on Tuesday. In it she sports a bikini top with large pastries attached to her chest and a bra that shoots out milk. With Gaga’s gun bra in “Alejandro,” we may have a battle for lingerie supremacy.

Some people believe Perry is overreacting, considering her past songs and videos. In some ways, “Alejandro” is nothing we haven’t seen before. The video seems like a “tamer” version of some of Madonna’s videos that shocked us 20 years ago. The religious iconography immediately recalls Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” video, which featured burning crosses and the singer cavorting about in a church in a skimpy dress. Gaga’s black vest and pants outfit is reminiscent of what Madonna wore in her “Vogue” video, and gun bra is the 2010 version of Madonna’s cone bra.

Neither Perry nor Gaga have commented on the post yet, but this incident will probably not slow down either star. You can be sure to expect more scandalous videos from the pair in the future. And admit it. Would we have it any other way?
