Before Metric ever appears on Sunday night at Terminal 5, Brooklyn-based band Bear in Heaven opens for a willing crowd. They play for what seems like an eternity (largely because they’re the only supporting act). I sit upstairs for most of their set, seated between the masses of paper bracelets; I count a beer in every other hand. And though it’s a rarity these days, there isn’t much of an age gap in the audience, which makes the music more of a priority than the setting itself.

The scene is very casual, very relaxed, and most everything is going well. But what strikes me is that the lighting for the entire opening act is awkward at best. It’s dark and moody for the first half of every song, but then a blinding white light will flash over the crowd, as if to wake us from the dead. Every five minutes. It has all the makings of a warning for more…

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler

Watch out late night, there’s a new lady in charge! The ratings are going up as more and more people tune into the E! Network. Why? Because, Chelsea Lately is on! Giving her audience the latest celeb news with a bit of sarcasm in-between, Chelsea Handler is best at leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. Let’s not forget the fact that she’s not ashamed to make a few jokes about herself.

But, Handler is more than just a talk show host. She’s an actress, stand up comedian and a best selling author. She even puts the jokes aside to go on more…

GreenFashion is a necessity, but one doesn’t realize how much damage it cam cause the earth. Most of us don’t know that 17 to 20 percent of all industrial air pollution comes from the treatment of fabric. This makes the textile industry the third biggest consumer and contaminator of water on the planet.  It is shocking news, but every bad news has a good. Designers such as Costello Tagliapietra and Lauren Bush, are going eco-friendly, designing their clothing to save the earth and help people.

Costello Tagliapietra’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection consisted of dresses in fabulous hues. The colors were inspired by the natural environment- Grecian goddesses, curve-complimenting ideal for a summer night. The best part of his collection, besides the beauty, is that half of the dresses incorporated AirDye taffeta. The process of AirDye consists of the color being dyed inside rather than on the fabric. Dyes are transferred from recycled paper onto fabric from used dyes and toners. The process can be done on chiffon, jersey, satin and any fabric with synthetic fibers. Each dress dyed saves 45 gallons of water, 95 megajoules of energy and 3 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Though the process may be difficult to understand, the numbers show more…

Ghost WriterRoman Polanski’s ominously dark cloud of a film does what it sets out to do – which is to say, set the stage for a cat-and-mouse thriller in the form of a political scandal – but accomplishes little else.

The movie has a few major kinks, most of which seem easily avoidable, making the errors even more glaringly unforgivable. Most noticeably, Kim Cattrall (as Adam Lang’s mistress) is completely out of place in the all-English ensemble drama. Her accent is muddled at best (something like a Bostonian doing a hideous Scottish accent) and it manages to kill her performance and detract from the plot.

Olivia Williams (as Ruth Lang) has a similar but different problem, in that her dialogue is painfully cliché. Her perfect (and authentic) accent, unfortunately, does nothing to help her case. She says things like, “The day before Mike died, he and Adam had a terrible more…
