There are up to 150,000 strands that make up a full head of hair. Thankfully, it doesn’t take that amount of people to maintain it. Good hair needs texture, requires length, and deserves some type of body. It’s believed that we’ll care for our hair the way we care for our pets. We groom them, feed them nutrition, and can’t help but pet them every so often. Just as a dog needs an owner, good hair needs a companion too; a hairstylist.
Today, salons have become a woman’s home away from home. It’s the one environment where women share the same needs, wants and interest; healthy hair. In fact, most women would live in the salon if they had the chance too. In today’s society all a woman needs is a comb, a mirror, hairspray, and a rack of gossip magazines to keep her occupied. (And just maybe, a handsome mail man to stop in every so often.) Whether you’re a natural kind of gal, or a diva that loves a weave, hair needs what all women need most; attention!
“Daddy, why don’t I have good hair?†Those were the exact words that lead comedian Chris Rock to produce his documentary Good Hair. The film, which focuses on African American women, opens our eyes to the amount of time and money spent to get the results of good hair. Rock explores the Bronner Bros. International Hair Show in Atlanta, which houses some of the most competitive hair dressers and the best hair products on the market.
Hair is a priority, hair is satisfying, but hair can be expensive! If you want hair like Sandra Bullock, it’s going to cost you. The Sally Hershberger Salon in New York is known to charge $600 for a haircut! But, these aren’t just celebrities stepping into the Hershberger Salon; these are clients that come from around the world in need of hairdos. Compared to the $45 neighborhood and local salon prices that we are accustomed to, the Hershberger salon may be a bit pricy but, worth it.
As we get older our hair changes in color and appearance. Along with that comes the more patience and time we need to possess. “We lose our hair, our teeth! Our bloom, our ideals, “said writer Samuel Beckett. But, the one thing we should never lose is the commitment we make to our hair.
