Taylor Swift wins album of the year

Taylor Swift wins album of the year

The longest awards show known to man made a crash landing Sunday evening. If you were among the millions of people huddled in front of your television, you saw the best and worst of what the night had to offer.

Everyone’s goo goo for Gaga, so it was only fitting that the queens opened the show, her performance included none other than Sir Elton John. Theatrical in every sense of the word, Gaga had one of the best performances of the night.

There was no sign of Kanye, as Taylor Swift jumped up to accept her award for “Album of the Year.” Surprisingly enough, the American idiots, also known as Green Day, performed a hit song from their upcoming Broadway Play.

Even though she’s oversaturated the market, you know Sasha Fierce wasn’t going to miss a chance to showcase her “lady-lumps”. She hit the stage for a throwback performance of “If I Were A Boy”, but also managed to throw in some Alanis

Morissette for an impromptu performance of “You Ought To Know”. Her performance wasn’t a highlight, but her almost falling down the steps once again provided a chuckle, but otherwise it was a snooze.

Pink and her trapeze received a standing ovation. Considering the revealing outfit, and her stability and strength, we guess the applause was warranted. One of the best groups, Black Eyed Peas, performed two of the hit songs from their latest album. Their performance started with “Imma Be”, complete with dancing boom-boxes, and they ended with “I Got A Feeling”. Make sure to check out the Peas’ live performance when they come to your city, trust us, it’s worth the money.

In a “where are they now”, Ringo Star and Norah Jones presented the award for “Record of the Year”.  In an unusual turn of events, the award went to Kings of Leon, which was quite a surprise since Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga were nominated as well.

Jamie Foxx and T-Pain blamed it on the goose, as they performed a club worthy showcase of one of hottest singles of 2009. To top it off, they brought out human beat box, Dougie Fresh and guitarist Slash.

The 3-D aspect of the Michael Jackson tribute, introduced by Lionel Richie, was a great touch. It definitely made for a better performance, and they picked the best artists to sing for the tribute. Likewise, Smokie Robinson was an added bonus, considering he knew Michael the longest, especially from his Motown days. To have his children accept the award on his behalf, along with 3T was unexpected, yet moving. The King of Pop was gone too soon, and he will truly be missed.

After the somber MJ tribute, CBS had to hit the crowd with something upbeat, and in their first ever Grammy performance-perhaps one of the greatest rock bands to hit this planet called Earth, Bon Jovi took the stage and performed two classic hits, “Living On A Prayer”, picked by the fans, and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”.

Beyonce’s husband and the woman that took her crown as the official “hottest chick in the game”, Rihanna, as well as an absent Kanye West, won for best “Rap/Sung Collaboration” for their hit song “Run This Town”.

Wyclef Jean, Haiti’s self-appointed representative, introduced-after a long-winded speech, a Haitian tribute featuring Mary J. Blige. Maxwell had everyone take flight with his Grammy award-winning song, “Pretty Wings”. Although his duet with Roberta Flack was boring- as she obviously forgot the words, and was forced to read from the teleprompter, it was funny.

Hip Hop’s finest shut down the Grammy’s. As Lil Wayne, Eminem, and newcomer Drake descended on stage to perform the ultimate rock collaboration with Travis Barker, they proved that regardless of what people may think- rap is here to stay.

This years’ award show was full of surprises. Beyonce made history, collecting six trophies, Gaga got two, and Taylor Swift finally lived the dream she thought was a distant memory. Despite the devil worshipping rumors, Jay and Rihanna still snatched a Grammy, and in a tribute fit for a King, we bid farewell to MJ.

See ya’ next year!
