Hilary Duff and designer Max Azria There’s one dress style that has been worn by nearly every celebrity. It’s tight, short, and brightly colored and sometimes features intricate designs. It’s a Herve Leger dress, of course. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, and Lindsay Lohan love the brand. A Herve Leger hugs the body and comes way above the knees. Stores such as Bebe have copied the design, but simply cannot compete with the original.

The designer started his life in the North of France in 1957. Later, he was accepted to art school and moved to Paris, in 1973. He went from hair design to making hats, which led him into the fashion world. His first hats were sold at Venus et Neptune, one of the most trendy shops on the Left Bank in Paris.

Herve Leger received his first break when working with knitwear designer Tan Guidecelli, where he learned to construct patterns, select fabrics and other essential tasks while being a courtier. Leger also worked with fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld. After free-lancing for a while, Leger decided to finally open his own store in 1985 in Paris. The style was ’simple yet sexy.’

Leger’s first showcase into the fashion world was in 1989. He wanted to create a show-stopping new look. In his studio, he wrapped some binding seam around a mannequin, and that was the start of his unique striped design. Now, his fabric is mixed with Lurex, Lycra and Elastane to create a tight, sexy fit around the body.

“I like to make women look beautiful, who want to please and be noticed,” he says. His recent collections had brightly colored pieces, as well as dresses fading from one shade to another. Most of his designs have the ‘bandaged’ signature look. He also started experimenting with sequins.

In September 1998, Herve Leger was acquired by BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP from the Seagram’s Group. In April 2007, designer Max Azria relaunched the Herve Leger brand under his own design direction. His Fall 2009 Collection features several black dresses with sequins, which creates a different textured feel for the dresses.
