Denim, it has become a representation of American fashion. Over the years jeans have come a long way, from classic blue denim to wide leg to skinny. But which ever style it is, jeans will always make a
statement. Perhaps it started with the classic Levi’s ads or the erotic Calvin Klein campaigns, but jeans have become a must have in every wardrobe.
Past Editor of Harper’s Bazaar, Diana Vreeland, once said, “Blue jeans are the most beautiful things since the gondola.” They didn’t become popular until the 1960′s in which the baby-boomers adopted the trend as their signature. The 1970′ A decade later, jeans became patched and faded. The 80′s were all about punk jeans, and of course Brooke Shields. “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins”?, was the 15 year olds first ad slogan which caused a lot of controversity.
The last couple of years are filled with different styles of jeans. The new millenium brought back the flare jeans. Later, it was the straight leg and after the wide leg. Finally, the skinny jean that remains popular to this day, especially in a array of colors. When in doubt, most of us go with jeans. “I’m like every other woman: a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear: So I wear jeans,” said Cameron Diaz.
Jeans slowly became an American staple. Anna Wintour’s first Vogue cover had a model wearing a pair of Guess? stonewash jeans, that was in 1988. From then on, Guess? adds were everywhere modeling denim clothing. In 2000, designers such as Chanel, Dior and Versace started bringing denim back on the runway. Later, denim shorts became popular, as for women that is. Jean shorts quickly became a popular trend worn by celebrities. Besides that, they also became a trend of california style.
With so many new trends out there, no wonder denim jeans are the most popular article for clothing. Dark jeans are always appropriate for the evening, while a lighter shade is better for day or summer. According to Cotton Incorporated, the average women has eight pair of jeans in her closet. Even though most trends come and go, such as shoulder pads, the favorite denim blue jeans will always be there, fashionably.
