About Perla Peralta

Most little girls want to grow up to be a ballerina, a veterinarian, or maybe even a queen. I decided I wanted to be an audio engineer and a radio personality at the age of five. Probably not the typical career selection for a five-year-old kid, but in reality I just wanted to play with the big colorful buttons and hear myself talk. I was born in the beautiful island of the Dominican Republic on December 10, 1989. I lived with my two loving parents and two older sisters. At a young age, I was greatly influenced by my father who was a musician. I wanted to be just like him. Unfortunately, being like him meant I’d have to go to late night parties to play. My parents didn’t think it was acceptable for a little girl to go to a late night party just to watch her dad preform. Can you believe that? So obviously I had to think of ways for me to be allowed to watch him play. My sneaky antics worked and I convinced my dad to let me become his little roadie. In doing this, my father taught how to use audio gear to help him set up for his band. He also allowed me to go watch him do interviews at local radio stations. I loved it. After a couple of years, I managed to master the sound equipment so well, that my father actually learned some tips from me! I also loved watching him interview with all of these amazing radio personalities of whom which I loved listening to on the radio on a daily basis. After this, my family and I moved to the United States and I spent about 14 years setting up my father’s equipment up until he retired from playing. I wanted to do more. In 2008, after high school I decided to move out to Jersey City, NJ so that I could be close to Manhattan and pursue a career in audio engineering. Unfortunately, no one took me seriously and all I was offered were unpaid internship. I was 18 and had bills to pay, so unpaid was a big no-no! Eventually in 2009, I gave in to the idea of attending school and went to SAE Institute of Technology so that I could receive an audio engineering certificate. After the one year program, I was lucky enough to land a job at the Verizon Center Arena in Washington D.C. as an assistant audio engineer for the Washington Wizards basketball team. It was a great opportunity, but after some time I found myself wanting to work in a radio station environment. After a year with the Wizards, I moved back north to Jersey City and found a board operating position at brand new online radio station called “Goom Radio”. The station had just migrated from London and opened a new station right in Jersey City and it was looking for young local talent. One afternoon while I was working, on of the radio personalities that were supposed to go live on air decided he wanted to quit after a huge argument with our boss. As a board operator, I continued playing music just to cover enough time until the next talent came in to work. Apparently that person was still 3 hours away from their show. My boss was so frustrated, that he looked at me and just yelled, “Do whatever you want, I’m going out for a walk. I’ll be back…whenever!” Of course, as soon as he left I grabbed the microphone and with a very shakey voice, I started my own show called, “Ayo Pearls”. I’d always wanted to be a radio personality, but I was just too scared. But after that day, I knew that my love for broadcasting was beyond the board. I wanted to work as a radio personality. In 2011, I left my job at Goom Radio because I wanted to go back to school. I enrolled at Bloomfield College and decided to major in broadcast journalism. I began my first year working at the college radio station doing a half hour health segment. So far I am in my second year, and I am excited to see what the future brings after graduation. (Hopefully I’ll finally get a chance to work at a station, and not jump in because someone decided to quit!) Currently, I work as a part-time writer for JobProsper.com. I write about current job openings around the New York area and also write a short segment (and by short, I mean 20 seconds short!) for the owner of the website’s segment on WPIX 11 Morning News called, “WPIX Job of the Day”. I am still learning a lot in the broadcast journalism field, but I am glad that I’ve gained the audio experience to at least know how to get around a radio station. I am excited for what the future holds, and if it’s anything like the roller-coaster ride I’ve been in so far, I know it’ll be great. Stay Tuned….
