Do you love your favorite TV show so much that you want to wear its theme colors on your fingernails next year? Do you often find yourself wishing that your favorite show had its own beer for you to drink while watching it? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, 2013 will be your year.
TV shows like “Modern Family,” “Girls” and “Game of Thrones” are coming out with their own nail polish and beer lines, respectively. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of these shows. However, I find my self asking, “Is this too much merchandising? Does it even make sense?”
Lena Dunham and Deborah Lippman are producing a nail polish collection based on HBO’s hit show “Girls,” and Twentieth Century Fox has teamed up with Nicole by OPI for a “Modern Family” collection. Sure, a nail polish collection for “Girls” makes sense because it is a show about girls, for girls. The girls’ different personalities are relatable and probably marketable. But a collection for “Modern Family?” No, it doesn’t make sense to me. I love nail polish, but Jay Pritchett’s face on the cover of an OPI box does not inspire me to make a purchase. Although, I have to give them credit for coming up with names like I Do De-Claire (“frosty rose”), Stand By Your Manny (“metallic cobalt”), and My Jay or The Highway (“unflattering taupe”).

HBO has partnered with Brewery Ommegang, a New York brewing company, to produce a beer line based on “Game of Thrones.” “Iron Throne,” the first to be released, will be available throughout the nation in mid-March, just in time for the show’s third season premiere. The rest of the beer line will be named after “themes of Westeros, the fictional realm where Lannisters, Starks, and various other factions battle for supremacy.” I think it’s a crazy idea (not crazier than the “Modern Family” OPI collection), but I know plenty of people who would actually buy the beer for the show.
