From the folk-friendly quintet The Lumineers to the blue-eyed soulful sound of Ed Sheeran, it seems as if up-and-coming artists rule when it comes to producing hits for the summer season.
Here are five artists you may or may not have heard about, feel free to thank me later:
It doesn’t get more eclectic than MS MR. If you liked Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die then you’ll absolutely love this dark wave duo’s debut album, Secondhand Rapture. Freckled with a neon tang and an innovative attitude, Lizzy Plapinger’s tone bears close resemblance to LDR’s sultry, empathetic sound. MS MR’s “Ash Tree Lane” and “BTSK” are lyrically sweet but you should check out their video for their moody tune, “Hurricane”:
Need a pick-me-up when you’re feeling bummed about those rainy, summer days? Now, Now is the band for you. Hailing from the misty slopes of Blaine, Minnesota comes the indie-rock triad who bring new meaning to the word love with their evocative, heartwarming tunes. Threads, the band’s debut record, is chock-full of clever tunes you’d wish you heard in high school. “Prehistoric” and “Wolf,” are among their catchiest tracks.
There’s nothing like some sistah power, and the LA-based, soft-rock trio, Haim, are forces to be reckoned with. After conditioning their sound with a remarkable Fleetwood Mac cover, Haim’s music revisits that good ole’ ’70s rock and roll sound only few contemporaries have managed to capture. Need something to groove to? “Don’t Save Me” and “Forever,” from their debut record, Forever, are ideal for soaking up some sun at the beach.
From her blonde locks to those sunny freckles, everything about Elizabeth “Lissie” Maurus is golden. Ever since the former honey-seller released her debut album, Catching A Tiger, in 2010, the singer’s been quite the busy bee. The California native’s upbeat, and in-your-face sound is sure to win over the hearts of folk rock lovers. Her latest sassy single, “Shameless,” has already made it onto my summer playlist but take a listen for yourself:
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Aside from being insanely attractive, the pair lends hip-hop a more symbolic, demeanor. Preaching equal rights in “Same Love,” and having created the ultimate hipster anthem, “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have quickly become one of America’s favorite new artists. Their second single, “Can’t Hold Us,” earned them historic praise, becoming the first duo whose first two singles reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their music is topping charts and iPod playlists, I’m sure.
These were just a few that came to mind. Who are some of your favorite breakthrough artists?Tags: haim, lissie, macklemore and ryan lewis, ms mr, music, nownow, summer
