The cast of Teen Wolf at the Movie Awards: Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, and Holland Roden

The MTV Movie Awards kicked off Sunday with a bang. In lieu of some of the hottest films this year, the awards were complete with vampires, wolves, witches, and of course, wizards. Yes, stars from the most popular films were in attendance, including  our favorite comic book heroes. No shortage of a star-studded affair, this year’s red carpet did not disappoint with bursts of color and bold and daring hues like red, neon, and yellow. There was a surplus of metallics and sequins as well as trendy cocktail dresses. The guys were dapper, yet safe, in vests, jackets, and tailored trousers. Read more to see which stars’ style sizzled on the red carpet and whose fizzled.

(From left to right: Emma Watson, Nikki Reed, and Kat Graham)

Proving that wizards and sorcerers can have fun too, Harry Potter star Emma Watson was easily best-dressed of the night  in this abstract-print Brood mini. With such an amazing print and carefully constructed seam detailing, the dress should stand on its own. Emma was careful in not going too overboard with the accessories and styling, wearing only a cuff and some beautiful, strappy heels. Nikki Reed shimmered in a metallic gold sheath by Randi Rahm. The classic silhouette worked for the Twilight actress, along with her leopard print clutch and metallic peep-toe heels. The “Put Your Graffiti on Me” singer and MTV special correspondent, Kat Graham, wore a plunging, draped Maria Lucia Hohan black gown. The strong shoulders and high slit exuded sexiness and sophistication, but the accessories and styling were distracting. Maybe if her hair were styled differently like a chic topknot or sleek ponytail with daintier earrings, then it would’ve been a more cohesive look for “The Vampire Diaries” star.

Lucy Hale and Kristen Stewart in bold color combinations

Actress Lucy Hale went for a more structured shape in this Catherine Malandrino frock. While I love the dress and the fusion of colors as well as her bejeweled Edie Parker clutch, the metallic platform pumps didn’t complement the dress.  There was a lot going on, but from the neck up, she looked amazing. Kristen Stewart is no stranger to short dresses. It seems to be her signature style on the red carpet, and there are some good elements in this silver Guishem dress, but the colors are more reminiscent of the Los Angeles Lakers than high fashion.

Sisters Paris and Nicky Hilton in gray

The Hilton sisters showed up on the red carpet in gray. Both wore Marco Squared cocktail dresses with Christian Louboutin pumps. Nicky’s strapless jacquard dress was chic and fashion-forward, while Paris played it a little safe in the sequined mini. But the true scene stealer here was Paris’ spiked clutch.

Charlize Theron in red (Photo courtesy of Getty Images)

Charlize Theron, who can honestly do no wrong on the carpet, was another favorite in this red Lanvin peplum gown. The Snow White and the Huntsmen star was perfection wearing very little jewelry and gold sandals. Of the stars who wore red, including Ciara in Balmain and Holland Roden (above), Charlize was the stand out. It can be easy to clash with the carpet in this color, but Charlize pulls it off effortlessly here.

In probably one of the most daring looks on the carpet, actress Ellie Kemper went bold in yellow and showed off her flower power in this Dolce & Gabbana long sleeved dress. The bright green clutch and neon pink pumps are the perfect additions to this fitted, sophisticated sheath. She definitely brightened up the carpet!

Elizabeth Banks and Christina Ricci in black

Two other best-dressed stars of the night in black were The Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks and “Pan-Am” actress Christina Ricci. Elizabeth wore a beautiful Elie Saab jumpsuit and took a risk that paid off. Her sleek topknot and the details on the side of the jumpsuit gave this look a feminine touch. Christina Ricci wore a dress from Project Runway’s Christian Siriano for Timex collection. She gets the most innovative award for wearing a dress embellished with watch pieces on the bodice, and the sweetheart neckline was really flattering for the petite star.

So, who were some of your favorites on the carpet?  Which A-listers made your best and worst-dressed list?
